Squirrel Control and Removal
Squirrels are very agile creatures and members of the rodent family the common grey squirrel is most common in the UK and the pest that will cause you a problem if gaining entry into your loft. Grey squirrels are most active during the day when they are out foraging for food from the ground and the trees.
It is a common problem to get squirrels in the loft and once they are in they will cause all sorts of damage. First of all they will find a weak point on your roof and gain entry, once they are in they will then make the entrance hole larger so they have easy access. Squirrels enter the roof space for different reasons but commonly it is to either build a nest or to get in out of the cold and keep warm. They will use the insulation in the loft to build a nest (drey) in which they can have their young knowing that it is a quiet and safe environment. Breeding time for a squirrel is in the spring but and older experienced mother may have another litter in the summer. A litter will consist of one to four young.
As with all rodents, squirrels need to gnaw to wear and sharpen there teeth so it is commonplace to see chewed timbers and wires stripped bare in a squirrel-infested loft. This can be extremely dangerous, as squirrels have been known to cause electrical fires through the gnawing of electrical cables and wires.
The Squirrel can also cause a great deal of damage to the garden by digging holes and hiding there food supplies when food is readily available and then searching for it come winter, they will hide food in plant pots on your patio and they also like freshly planted bulbs.
If you are seeing a lot of squirrel activity in your garden, seeing them run up and down the fence line to your house, see them sitting on your flat roof extension, but more importantly hearing noises in the loft then there is a good chance you may have squirrels in the loft.
If this is the case and you are hearing noises then it is best to get a professional in who is competent in squirrel removal. Capture and release is not allowed and against regulations so there are several options available. Squirrel poisoning has a number of rules and regulations, which you must follow and should only be carried out by a professional pest controller who knows what he is doing.
