Signs of a Mice Infestation

The first step in successfully removing a mouse problem from your property is accurately identifying the type of pest that is causing you problems. Rodent infestations are often confusing as the damage that rats and squirrels create is incredibly similar to that caused by a mouse. There are several types of mice found in the UK, some of which look like rats, but they have distinguishing features, such as protruding ears and hairy tails.

Noises

Mice, just like most rodents, tend to be most active during the night. They will run around your home, looking for food, water and nesting materials during the early hours of the morning. As they do so, they will make noise, usually in the form of scratching or tiny footprints. Mice often hide in tight spaces, such as wall cavities and attics. During the day, you probably wouldn’t be able to notice the sounds, but in the middle of the night, when you’re trying to sleep, they suddenly become very noticeable. Listen out for such noises on your floorboards, ceilings, in your walls, and in the loft.

Mouse Droppings

Mice, on average, produce up to 80 droppings every night. Unfortunately for you, they aren’t toilet trained! They will leave their droppings wherever they go across all areas of your property. Mice droppings are much smaller than rat droppings, measuring roughly 5mm in length. They are usually dark in colour and will be scattered randomly across all problem areas. We recommend checking inside cupboards, around your skirting boards, and in your loft space for mice droppings.

Smell

You might have thought droppings were bad, but the smell that builds up when there’s an active mouse problem on your property can be overwhelming. Mice will also urinate wherever they go, leaving behind pools of urine that will dry over time, resulting in an incredibly strong ammonia-like scent evident throughout your home.

Nests

The main reason mice will enter your property is for shelter. Once they’ve found a location with easy access to food and water, they will begin to build a nest. Mice use whatever materials they can find around them, shredding up loft insulation, paper, soft furnishings etc., to build their nest. Check the secluded areas of your home for piles of shredded materials, particularly in the loft and your airing cupboard.

Smear Marks

Mice are not the cleanest animals on the planet; as they scurry around dark and secluded locations, they pick up dirt and grime. This dirt, combined with the oils from their skin, causes distinctive smear marks to appear throughout your home, particularly as they brush against walls, floors and skirting boards on their travels. So look out for unexplainable grease marks or dirt throughout your home.

Footprints

As they travel throughout your home, mice will leave behind tiny footprints that are a clear sign of their presence. Dusty areas like the loft mean they are more noticeable. However, if you suspect you have a mouse problem, you can leave a thin layer of flour or talcum powder on the floor overnight. If there are visible footprints left behind in the morning, then it’s highly likely you’ve got yourself a mice infestation.
